Dave Bendigkeit and the Keepers of the Flame, with David Udolf, Chris Amberger and Akira Tana, continue their weekly performances (now in their third year) every Monday from 7:00 to 10:00 pm at Brisbane’s historic Seven Mile House. As veterans of the Bay Area jazz scene, they have played with everyone from Cab Calloway, Shelly Manne and Ella Fitzgerald to Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Stitt, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Art Blakey and many other giants of this music. They bring a stellar collective talent to the bandstand, where their mastery of both the complex language of jazz and the intricate rules of improvisation yields an easy, congenial musical expression that is spontaneous, playful and intuitive.
Trumpeter Dave Bendigkeit “is, above all, an expressive soloist, one who shows that rare combination of virtuosity and individualism which has always marked jazz’s superior talents. . . . “ - Ted Gioia - Quartet Records
As a leader of Keepers of the Flame he creates an egalitarian framework where original arrangements of bebop, post-bop and latin-tinged compositions, as well as heartfelt explorations of old standards find dynamic expression in the band’s grooving interpretations. Dave brings Jack Sheldon-like humor, a raconteur’s panache and an astonishing facility with one of jazz’s most demanding instruments to every performance. He also allows the talents of each of his accomplished band mates to shine through as soloists and as part of this high-spirited ensemble.
