Madam Michiya Hanayagi Presents 53rd Classical Japanese Dance Recital

Madame Michiya Hanayagi studied traditional and classical Japanese dance since early childhood. The Headmaster of the Hanayagi School in Tokyo recognized her as a Hanayagi teacher when she received her certification in 1947. She soon settled in the United States where she established the Michiya Hanayagi Dance Studio in 1956. She has been teaching classical Japanese dance to people of Japanese and non-Japanese ancestry. She was honored as one of the recipients of the Foreign Minister’s Commendation in commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the US-Japan Relationship. The Hanayagi School honored her with the prestigious “Ryuho Sho” Award in 2008 and in 2009, “Sun, Gold and Silver Rays’ by the Japanese Government. Because of her strong devotion to the preservation of Japanese classical dance, Madame Hanayagi continues to teach younger generations this appreciation of Japanese traditional arts in America.
